Background & Challenge
The homeowners approached us to renovate the main living room of their Hartley Wintney family home.
It’s a bright, welcoming space, with leaded windows overlooking the garden, glazed doors opening onto the conservatory and a fireplace at its heart. After years of family life, it needed far more than a fresh coat of paint.
The old radiators sat awkwardly under the window and beside the television, the ceiling wasn’t suited to new light fittings and the room needed updated sockets, flooring and finishes throughout.
The family were living at home throughout, so they needed a contractor who could coordinate every trade, keep the house clean and tidy and keep them informed from start to finish.
They Chose Us Because…
Marshels were recommended by the family’s interior designer, Elizabeth Designs, who knew we could offer a genuine end-to-end service, managing every trade under one roof.
We have worked alongside interior designers for many years, bringing their schemes to life with the care and attention to detail they expect.
The homeowners already knew our work. We had transformed their hallway some years earlier, so they trusted us to deliver the same quality and care in the room next door. Since the project, they have recommended Marshels to friends, who have gone on to use our services too.

Scope of Work
Heating and Electrics
Radiators Removed, Pipework Rerouted
The old radiators under the window and beside the television were removed and the pipework rerouted. Two period-style column radiators now heat the room, freeing up wall space and suiting the character of the home.
New Sockets Throughout
New electrical sockets were installed as part of the upgrade, with pipework and cabling concealed so the walls stay clean and uncluttered.

Ceilings, Walls & Joinery
Ceiling Reworked For New Fittings
The ceiling was reworked and re-plastered to take the new light fittings, with the original plaster detail retained where it still suited the room.
Richly Textured Wallpaper
The walls were prepared and hung with a richly textured wallpaper, bringing warmth and depth to the space.
A Contemporary Skirting Upgrade
Our decorator recommended a deeper, more contemporary skirting board, a detail the homeowners hadn’t considered. It now frames the whole room.
Windows And Doors Restored, Not Replaced
Rather than replacing them, we repainted the windows and sanded and painted the doors, keeping the character of the house while giving it a fresh finish.
Flooring & Finishing Touches
Screed And Herringbone Floor
The floor was screeded to give a level, solid base, then finished in a warm herringbone that flows naturally towards the conservatory.
Ready For The Final Layer
With the main works complete, the family are now choosing the final lighting, artwork and decorative pieces to put their own stamp on the room.
Where It Started: Managed Project
A Featured Entrance
The new living room flows naturally from the hallway, which Marshels transformed some years earlier. We hung a patterned feature wallpaper, painted the doors and fitted a glass balustrade with an oak handrail.
That first project built the trust that brought the family back to us for the living room.

A Smooth, Fully Managed Project
Refurbishing a room while a family lives around it takes careful planning and a considerate team. Marshels project-managed the
whole job from start to finish.
What made the difference for the family:
- One point of contact coordinating every trade
- Close collaboration with their interior designer, Elizabeth Designs
- Clear communication about when the team would arrive and leave
- A polite, diligent team who kept the house clean and tidy every day
- Expert advice, such as the skirting upgrade, that lifted the finished result
The homeowners were so pleased with the result that they have recommended Marshels to
friends, who have since used us for their own projects.
