INTRODUCTION
Marshels were appointed to deliver an interior refurbishment of Sorrel Social Café, located in Guildford’s Tunsgate Quarter. The owners wished to refresh the space, improve customer flow and enhance the overall customer experience while preserving the café’s warm, community-focused atmosphere.
The project involved a combination of joinery works, electrical upgrades, layout adaptations and full redecoration. All works were designed to improve functionality for staff, increase service efficiency and create a welcoming, modern environment for customers.

BACKGROUND & CHALLENGE
The café required a thoughtful upgrade to modernise the interior and improve usability without losing its charm.
Key consideration included:
- Enhancing an outdated layout so staff and customers could move more easily.
- Updating worn worktops, surfaces and fittings.
- Integrating new appliances into existing framework.
- Improving lighting and electrical positioning to support the café’s workflow.
- Maintaining cash flow during refurbishment by keeping the café open park-week.
Rather than closing entirely, the project works were designed so the café remained open every Friday to Sunday. Works were undertaken Monday to Thursday over three weeks. This ensured customers could continue to enjoy the space while the business maintained consistent revenue.
INTERNAL WORKS
Joinery & Installation
Marshels delivered a wide range of bespoke joinery and layout improvements, including:
- Removal of existing planks and installation of new countertops and counter walls.
- Adaptation of the existing framework and enlargement of the fridge housing to suit a new unit.
- Installation of new shelving, wall units, a breakfast bar and an upgraded sugar/waste station.
- Adaptation of worktops and installation of new fridges.
- Refurbishment of existing tables, chairs and benches, which were sanded and lacquered to restore their natural finish.
Electrical & Lighting
To support the new layout and improve functionality, electrical works included:
- Adjustments to electrical services and relocation of necessary points.
- Installation of additional sockets for laptops, printers and new equipment.
- Upgraded lighting throughout, including feature and task lighting to illuminate the counter and panelling.
- Replacement of the WC extractor fan and installation of client-supplied light shades.
Decorating & Finishing
The interior received a full refresh, including:
- Complete repainting of ceilings, walls, wood trims and galvanised conduits.
- Tiling to the right-hand side of the counter.
- Replacement of the rubber tile transition bar.
- Full redecoration of the WC.

The refreshed layout and upgraded finishes significantly improved the customer journey and staff workflow.
